MICA Residence Life

Residence Life offers many different leadership positions. Students can apply to be Residential Advisors, Studio Mangers, or Desk Assistants. Desk Assistants can also apply to be Desk Coordinators or Mail Coordinators. To apply to any of our positions, complete the OneApp by Feb. 11th, 2018.

Residential Advisor (RA)*

Position Description
The Office of Residence Life and Off-Campus Housing seeks individuals interested in making a difference in MICA’s residential communities.  RAs are live-in student leaders that focus on community development by hosting fun programs, providing peer counseling, enforcing policy, and serving as a general campus resource. Along with the Office of Residence Life, RAs work to foster a living environment that is supportive and productive to all groups and individuals at MICA regardless of their race, gender, religion, nationality, sexual orientation, or ability.  MICA RAs are instrumental in helping to create a residential experience that is consistent with MICA’s mission and supportive of residents’ as artists and students. While serving their community RAs also have the opportunity to hone their own skills in time management, problem solving, critical thinking, and professional development.

​Eligibility
RAs must be upperclass students (sophomore and above), enrolled full time for the entire academic year, in good academic and judicial standing at the time of application, and maintain a cumulative 3.0 GPA or higher. Current or previous on-campus/community living experience is preferred but not required.

Time Commitment
The time commitment for an RA varies greatly throughout the year but average to approximately 10 to 20 hours a week. Work hours include night time on-call response coverage, planning and implementing community programming, and informal interactions with residents.

Compensation
In addition to the intrinsic rewards of helping to create a warm, open, and diverse residential community, RAs receive:
  • A single bedroom (RA's may pull in two roommates)
  • A $550 annual stipend
  • A 75 meal plan per semester plus $80 dining dollars

Application Timeline
Students interested in applying for the RA position must:
  1. Attend a mandatory iLead information session
  2. Submit an application via OneApp. Please note, successful completion of an RA application will also include: Cover letter, Resume, ​Two letters of reference. (These can be from a supervisor, faculty, staff, a coach, or an RA at MICA, but at least one letter must be from a MICA community member.)
  3. Participate in a group interview. You will be notified if you will be asked to participate in the group interview process. The group interview is comprised of leadership and team oriented challenges during the day or evening of Friday, February 8, 2019. Please hold this date and plan your schedules accordingly.
  4. Complete an individual interview. You will be notified if you receive an interview via email. Interview sign up times will be available from the Office of Residence Life beginning mid February 2019. Individual interviews will occur over two weeks beginning Monday, February 18th - Friday, March 1st. Please hold these dates and plan your schedules accordingly. Applicants must have attended an information session and submitted the OneApp in order to be eligible for an interview.
  5. Participate in a group interview. You will be notified if you will be asked to participate in the group interview process. The group interview is comprised of leadership and team oriented challenges on the evening of Friday, February 23rd, 2019. Please hold this date and plan your schedules accordingly.
  6. Decision letters will be available on Friday, March 15th, 2019.

 Studio Manager (SM)*

Position Description
The Studio Manager (SM) oversees the day to day operation of the residential studios, including developing a sign in/out procedure that meets the needs of the residents. The SM is responsible for educating the community on studio policies at the beginning of each semester. The SM is expected to act as a community educator on safe practices within a residence hall and perform routine studio safety checks. There is one SM for the Founder's Green and one for the Upperclass Student Communities (Meyerhoff House and The Gateway). It is preferred the SM lives on-campus, but it is not required.

Eligibility
The SM must be in good academic and judicial standing with a GPA of 3.0 or better.

Time Commitment
Usually 3 hours per week

Compensation
SMs receive the minimum wage (as of July 2018, it is $10.10/hr).

Desk Assistant (DA)*

Position Description
Desk Assistants work at the front desks of Founders Green, Meyerhoff House, and the Gateway to provide assistance to the MICA residential community. Successful DAs must be assertive, consistent, problem solvers, and excellent communicators. Typical duties may include logging mail packages, answering questions and serving as a general resource to residents and the campus community. Students hired as DAs will gain transferable skills in leadership, customer service, communication, administration, crisis management, and overall professionalism. DAs also experience increased interactions with diverse students, connections with residence life staff, and many professional development opportunities.
Students hired as DA's can also apply to be residential Mail Coordinators and Desk Coordinators (see position descriptions below).

Eligibility
DAs must be in good academic and judicial standing at the time of hire, maintain a cumulative 3.0 GPA or higher, be enrolled as a full time MICA student, and live in on-campus housing (applies to newly hired DAs only).

Time Commitment
The time commitment varies based on scheduled shifts at the various front desks. Student DAs are not permitted to work more than 35 hours  per week.

Compensation
DAs receive minimum wage (as of July 2018, it is $10.10/hr).

Application Timeline
Interviews start at the end of February and decisions are made before Spring Break.
Desk Assistants are chosen at the end of each semester to begin working the following semester.
For Fall 2019, students must complete the ONEapp by February 3, 2019. Summer staff are not selected through ONEapp.

Desk Coordinator (DC)*
Location: Meyerhoff, Founders Green, and Gateway
Number of staff per year: Two-Three

Position Description
The DCs are student staff members who work closely with the front desk operations graduate assistant and will have the responsibility of assisting with the management and operation of Founders Green, Meyerhoff, and Gateway front desks. The DCs assist with the supervision, recruitment, selection, training, and evaluation of the DAs.

​Responsibilities
  • Bi-weekly meeting with their supervisor.
  • Assist in the recruitment, selection, and training of new DAs.
  • Create and maintain temporary and permanent schedules, desk files; contact DAs to fill shifts, and resolve scheduling conflicts, as well as other administrative tasks.
  • Provide needed emergency coverage for the desk if available.
  • Create and update timesheets, verify hours worked and signatures on desk assistant timesheets on a bi-weekly basis.
  • Keep track of supply needs at the desks.
  • Meet and be in constant communication with the residential coordinators and the front desk operations graduate assistant.
  • Organize and prepare materials for DA staff meetings upon request.

Time Commitment
Hours per week vary based on staff meetings, pay periods, opening/closing of halls, training and selection process.

Compensation
Regular hourly DA rate plus $1.25.

Mail Coordinator (MC)*
Location: Meyerhoff, Founders Green, and The Gateway
Number of staff per year: One per residential complex, with an additional coordinator in Founders Green

Position Description
The mail coordinators are responsible for organizing all of the mail that their building receives. The main goal of the mail coordinator is to ensure all mail is being delivered to its appropriate recipient in a timely fashion. Mail coordinators are also responsible for managing expectations for desk assistant performance related to the handling of student mail.

Responsibilities
  • Mail coordinators must make time Monday through Friday to sort the mail and notify students of their packages.
  • Mail coordinators are responsible for sending out emails every day to notify students that they have a package and for sorting flat mail into the return to sender and/or individual mail boxes present at each desk.
Time Commitment
Varies based on the community and influx of mail, but approximately 4-8 hours per week

Regular hourly DA rate plus $1.
